singlittledarling asked: So this isn't me defending Islam, this is me stating what I know having been brought up in a Muslim household.
A lot of Islam's statutes are severely outdated, however the most overlooked statute is one which encourages the religion to adjust and qualify the other statutes depending on the development of the society.
The modern perception of Islam isn't of the faction that considers this statute, it is of those who ignore it.
Which is rather unfortunate.
The law about women being required to cover themselves up was a necessity of the time, the same as the ban against pork. Just as, 1400 years ago, pork was unsafe and unsanitary to eat, men were greedier and more violent than now. Islam's solution was to cover what was coveted.
It's unfortunate that as the times have changed (rather quickly in the last century in particular), this ideology has lingered in male dominated countries. And, at this point, that's what this law is representative of. The pathetic excuse for patriarchy that is corruption in countries like Saudi Arabia.
As unfortunate as all this is, I'll take the positive where I can find it, and a lot of Muslims are happy with their religion as they know it, and I'll give them their happiness until we can find something better.
Duly noted and good call. Posted for everyone to see it.
